I can’t recall where I first saw this idea, but let me tell you… ever since we learned how to make a paper bag snowflake—trust me, it’s easy!—our house has been FILLED with them every winter since.
Paper bag snowflakes turn out stunningly beautiful Every. Single. Time. Plus, they’re easy enough to make for little crafters to join in (no need to cut any intricate shapes!), and older kids can get creative with how they cut their snowflakes.

How to Make a Paper Bag Snowflake
Now, let’s make some paper bag snowflakes!
Materials
For this craft, you will need:
- paper bags (8 for each snowflake)
- glue (hot glue, a glue stick, or glue tape works well)
- string (to hang your snowflake)
- scissors
Directions
To start, count out 8 paper bags to make your paper bag snowflake. Depending on the size of your paper bags, you may find it easier to use a couple more or less, but I have found that 8 works well for the vast majority of sizes.
We’re going to add some glue to the back of one of the paper bags in an upside down T shape (one strip of glue across the base of the bag, and another strip down the middle, from top to bottom).
Now place another bag on top (make sure the bottoms of the bags are facing the same direction).
Add some glue in the same way to the back of the second paper bag, then stack a third paper bag on top. Keep adding glue in a T shape and stacking your paper bags until you have all 8 paper bags glued together. Depending on your scissor skills …and your scissor’s skills—that dull pair in your junk drawer might be put to the test!—you might want to only glue 4 bags together at a time to make it easier to cut in the next step.
Now we get to cut some shapes into the paper bag stack! Cut the top (where the bags open) into a point. You can stop right there and have a beautiful paper snowflake, or you can keep going…
…and cut a little triangle or half circle into the sides. You can get creative with this step, trying different shapes along the top and sides. They quite honestly look amazing no matter what!
If you’re working with two stacks of 4 bags, simply cut out the same design from both stacks, then glue them together to form one big stack of paper bags.
Now the fun part! You’re going to slowly open up the bags, bringing the top and bottom paper bags around to make a circle, securing them with some glue. If your bags do not meet or are stretched too tightly, you can add more paper bags to your stack as needed.
Poke a hole in the top of your paper bag snowflake, then thread a piece of string, yarn, or ribbon through and hang it up!

Then… repeat this process about 800 million times because you’ll be so addicted to creating them you won’t want to stop.
AND you’ll be way too excited when you realize that those rainbow paper bags you found in the bottom of the gift wrapping bin have exactly eight colours and look SO FUN as a birthday decoration!
